Wiki, Blog, Paideia

Student Teaching: Week 9

  1. That is so exciting about your class blogs and wikis!!!! I wanted to see how that played out because I know we had talked about that last class. Very cool!

I really like your idea about having a folder for each student to upload homework – I think I may have to add that to my class wikis.

And as far as productive blog conversation, kudos to you! It is amazing to see how much more productive conversation and discussion is when you begin the blogs/wikis – I noticed the same in my 4th block. 3rd is still working towards appropriate blogging ha! But for the most part, it’s pretty good stuff. So glad to hear that it’s going well for your classes too! Keep me posted…

  2. Andy,
It sounds like things couldn’t be going better! I think that it is great that you have started a Wiki. I found success with it in my class :) You are certainly doing a great job differentiating and giving choice. One thing that I had issues you with the Wiki was giving students class time to work on it and getting computers to do so. Moreover, students couldn’t edit pages at the same time. It seems like your blogs fix that problem. Do you give them time during class to work online? I know several of my students do not have access at home, so I had them come in during other times, and I worked with them on an individual basis. I would love to hear how you negotiate this. Keep up the great work!

  3. It sounds like things are going wonderfully! I am glad that your technology action project is going so well. I also started my technology project during week nine. I was really nervous about how it would go, but so far I feel like it is going well. My students are creating podcasts on Othello and then I will be posting them to gcast for all of my sections to hear. I am nervous to see how it all ends up; hopefully it will continue to be a positive experience.
So, you created blogs for all of the students rather than having them create their own blogs? How do you keep up with all of the blogs? Do you have a folder in your favorites and do they contain any identifying markers of the students? I would like to try something like that when I start teaching outside of student teaching, but I really just don’t know how to go about doing it. I really like the class wiki idea. I think that is a great forum for students to submit work and be able to share across periods. That would be especially useful working with literature circles. I will have to borrow those ideas for my own practice when the time comes. :)
It is so wonderful that your students really appreciate your time with them. I am glad that it has been such a positive experience! Keep up the great work and congratulations on everything so far!
